CWG 2018 Boxing Highlights: Pooja Dhanda bags Silver, Naman Tanwar, Divya Kakran settles Bronze

Indian Boxer Naman Tanwar lost the first fight as Australia’s Jason Whateley beaten him in Men’s 91kg semi-final bout. He settled the bronze medal for India. While Amit Phangal defeated Uganda’s Juma in 46-49 kg weight category and sealed his place in the final. He will take on England’s Galal Yafai in the gold medal match. After him, Gaurav Solanki beat Sri Lanka’s Ishan Bandara in the 52kg bout by a split judgment; Now he will take action against Northern Ireland’s Brendan Irvine in the final on Saturday. Manish Kaushik picked victory over Northern Ireland’s James McGivern in 60kg category by a split decision. He will fight battle Australia’s Harry Garside in the final. Now, Hussamuddi Mohammed will take on England’s Peter McGrail in Men’s 56kg fight. After which the big guns Manoj Kumar and Vikas Krishan will be in action. The former will take on England’s Pat McCormack in the 69kg category, and the latter will battle Northern Ireland’s, Steven Donnelly. Satish Kumar will compete against Seychelles’ Keddy Agnes in +91kg category.

CWG Boxing Updates

1:30 AM IST- INDIA WIN SILVER! Pooja Dhanda wins Silver Medal with a super effort in the closing stages of her gold medal match. She lost the game by 5-6 and bags the silver medal in 57kg freestyle wrestling. Second Silver Medal of Day 9 for Team India.

12:30 AM IST- Now, Indian Boxer Hussamuddin Mohammed will play against England’s Peter McGrail in Men’s 56kg semifinal for India in the afternoon session.

10:45 AM IST– Inspite of the loss, Naman Tanwar will take the bronze medal in CWG 2018 for India! Terrific achievement for the young lad.

10:43 AM IST– Naman Tanwar looks to bring the fight to the Australian Jason Whateley as he launches, but he looks exhausted in the middle. The first round has taken a lot out of him. But he continues to punch Whateley. It is too close to call.

10:40 AM IST– A different approach from the Indian in the second round – as he starts off with a defensive strategy in the second round. Whateley looked to deliver a series of right-and-left to his opponent, but Naman Tanwar countered and thrust a right-and-left combo of his own. Whately delivered a punch on Tanlar’s back head which made him give a punch to Whateley’s ear as the referee gave him a warning. Tanwar completely slowed down by the end of the round as the Australian delivered jabs on his face. THIS IS A FIGHT!

10:30 AM IST- Naman Tanwar starts with his unusual style – he teases his opponent and then lands a couple of right hands on his head. The Australian is confused in the ring now. Aggressive play from Tanwar early on. Both the boxers exchange blows with two minutes on the clock. Whateley tries to get into the fight, but Talwar defended well – that until the Australian remitted two blows on his head to send him off his feet. Terrible start to the fight.

9:12 AM IST- Amit has defeated his Uganda opponent Juma Miiro by a unanimous decision by the judges, and he reaches the final of the 46-49kg weight category. He will compete for the gold medal.

9:10 AM IST- Knowing he is trailing behind, Juma looked to take charge early on, but Amit defended well and controlled to turn the tables around on his opponent. He then landed a vicious blow on Juma’s forehead which almost knocked the Uganda boxer down. The Indian looks to be the clear winner here.

9:05 AM IST- Juma was really exposed by Amit as he continued to lead the charge on his opponent in the second round. The Uganda boxer tried to go deep into his corner to defend, but Amit continued to chase him down. He managed to get a couple of clean strikes on Juma’s forehead, and he maintains the lead

9:00 AM IST- It was a defensive start from both the boxers as they defended in the opening minutes of the boxing bout – But the fight burst out in the final minute as Amit launched some attacking strikes on Juma’s head. He looks to be in the lead after Round 1.

8:25 AM IST- First Up – Amit in 46-49 kg weight category, India’s Amit will first be in action against Uganda’s Juma Micro. Both the boxers are strong medal contenders – and are already assured of bronze. They would want to go higher though. Who will win?
