Abhiyude Katha Anuvinteyum movie review: A bittersweet love story

Abhiyude Katha Anuvinteyum, starring Tovino Thomas and Pia Bajpai, is a bittersweet love story about two people who meet each other, quickly fall in love and then there’s a twist that makes everything fall apart around them. Abhi, played by Tovino, is a normal boy who just wants a good life and nothing more, while Anu is someone who has been living with a social stigma of a farmer. They meet each and fall in love, also deciding to marry each other quickly. Complications arrive when she becomes pregnant and somethings are revealed that could upend their lives, and destroy their families.

The two leads of the movie do the heavy lifting, giving performances that are lived in and devoid of any glamour or mannerisms. They also have decent chemistry, which helps as the twists has to make us root for them. This it achieves perfectly. Although the movie is not a cinematographic marvel and looks real, rather than going with the highly theatrical feel that romance movies often do.

The movie is also supported by exceptional characters who do their best to get out of the typical family roles written for them, and succeed with varying degrees. It will be easy to dismiss the movie as something light and unsubstantial, but its also important to note that the movie doesn’t rest just on the entertainment value, but also gives us two characters to relate with.
