Thunderstorm, IMD warns fifteen states about the possible change in weather conditions

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that thunderstorm, with gusty winds could assault West Bengal and Odhissa. Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand, South interior part of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Lakshadweep and northeastern states like- Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram and Tripura. Duststorms can also attack Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh today, as the department warned. Rajasthan is also likely to hit by thunderstorms because of the worsening weather conditions. The weather in the northern regions of the country has been awful for a while, with a powerful thunderstorm that claimed the lives of 80 people in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan an due to lightning earlier this month, and left at least 100s injured. The damage to the physical properties has also been severe. Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Tamil Nadu will continue to experience heavy rainfall for coming days.

The department has released the warning for the next three days, which should be adhered to, till May 23 2018. On the occasion of a thunderstorm,  dust storm, or heavy rain, people are advised to remain in their homes, and not venture outside unnecessarily. And, during a thunderstorm, they shouldn’t communicate with their phones still attached to the plugs, as that could cause an electric accident if the lightning travels through the wires.

If they’re caught outside, they should take shelter somewhere, and only walk outside when the conditions have improved. After the storm, if they notice that there has been a mishap and someone needs medical attention, they are advised to call the authorities and help those who have been affected by the storm.
