Happy Chhath Puja 2017: Festival Celebration and Images

Chhath Puja celebrated an only Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Surya and his wife Devi Usha. Lord Sun’s wife Usha is worshipped as Chhath Maiya or Chathi Maiya. Devotees celebrate this festival to thank Surya Devta and Chhath Maiya for their protection and to take their blessings for good health and happiness. Chhath is a Bhojpuri word, which means “six” and celebrated on the sixth day of Kartik month according to Hindu Calendar, Vikram Samvat. It is believed that in Mahabharata, Draupadi performed Chhath Puja and worshipped Lord Sun for the first time.  From that onwards, the day of Chhath Puja became a significant festival in the Hindu religion.

Chhath Puja is four days festival, on the first day, the Hindu people take a dip in the Holy water the Ganga and Yamuna river. They bring Ganga or Yamuna Jal (holy water) and prepare food or Prashad. A day before Chhath, on the Second day of Chhath festival, devotees observe a fast for the whole day and open their fast next day on Chhath after Suriya Puja. Devotees pray to the Sun and offer kheer, Puri, Rasia, Kasar, and bananas as prasad. On the Chhath, devotees go to the river bank(Ganga and Yamuna) or ghats of other water bodies along with their family members and offer prasad to Lord Sun in evening. They worship Lord Sun and Chhath Maiya for the happiness and prosperity for them and their family. On the last day, devotees head to the river bank or ghats of other water bodies before the sun rises and offer prayers to the rising sun.
