Guru Nanak Dev Jayanti 2017: Birth Date, Importance and Celebrations

548th Birth Anniversary of Guru Nanak will be observed on 4th November 2017. Guru Nanak Jayanti is also known as Guru Nanak Gurupurab and Guru Nanak’s Prakash Utsav celebrated as the birth date of first Sikh guru Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. This is one of the most significant festivals for Sikh people. Guru Nanak Dev Ji is a founder of the Sikh religion, was born on November 04, 1469 in Rai Bhoi di Talwandi in Shekhupura district of Pakistan which is now known as Nankana Sahib. Guru Nanak Jayanti is an important festival of the Sikh Calendar and celebrated in all around the world by the Sikh Community. It is celebrated as colorful festival especially in Punjab and Haryana.

Guru Nanak day activities include Akhand Paath which refers to a 48 hours continuous reading of the Sikh holy book, “Guru Granth Sahib“. Every gurudwara is decorated with lights and flowers. Prabhat Pheri is conducted in the early morning from every gurudwara. Nagar Kirtan is also organized with five armed guards called Panj Pyaras”. A team of Sikh people attired in traditional clothes promoting traditional weapons play called Gatka in Nagar Kirtan.  A team of Sikh people attired in traditional clothes promoting traditional weapons play called Gatka. Gurudawara community in all gurudwaras organize special “langar” and serve food with full devotion. Karah Prasad is also served to the people on the day of Guru Nanak Jayanti.
