Dhanteras, also known as Dhanatrayodashi, is one of the important festivals of Hindu religion. ‘Dhan’ means ‘wealth’ and ‘Teras’ means ’13th day of the moon cycle’, so this festival is observed on 13th day of Kartik month of Hindu calendar. According to Hindu mythology, it is believed that on the day of Dhanteras Goddess Lakshmi came out during the churning of the milky ocean along with the Lord Kuber (God of wealth). Devotees pray to Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kuber on the auspicious day of Dhanteras and wish for their blessings. People decorate their house and office with lights and colorful rangoli to welcome Goddess Lakshmi. Traditional rangoli art is known to be auspicious on the day of Dhanteras. people make rangoli by using colored sand, rice flowers, and leaves.

On the day of dhanteras, Hindu people believed that purchasing gold and silver is very auspicious and bring good luck in their family. Some people also buy new kitchen utensils on dhanteras. Shopkeepers and companies give the number of schemes on the occasion of dhanteras. People like to purchase new things on dhanteras for them and their family. During the period of Dhanteras, it is believed goddess Lakshmi come and stays inside the home, so dhanteras is considered the best time during the festival of Diwali.
