Baywatch box office collection: The film fails to work its magic in India too

Priyanka Chopra’s much talked about Hollywood debut film Baywatch hit theatres on June 2 in India but has failed to impress the masses as well as critics. Up until Saturday, the film managed to rake in a meagre 3.50 crore at the Indian box office. Let us take a look at the day wise box office collection the film has managed.

Previews (Limited shows held before the official release on Friday) : 25 lakhs

Friday: 1.50 crore

Saturday: 1.75 crore

This brings the two day total of the film (including the preview earnings) to 3.5 crore. The official data for Sunday is not out but according to estimates the film could have barely managed to earn 1.50 crore. This takes the weekend total to an approximate 5 crore, which by any means is below average.

The India- Pakistan cricket match on Sunday afternoon also affected the film’s earnings which could have otherwise been capitalised owing to a holiday.

Baywatch is an American action comedy film based on a television series of the same name. This series was about a team of attractive lifeguards who patrol a crowded recreational beach. Now, this particular movie shows lifeguard Mitch (Dwayne Johnson) and a flamboyant new recruit (Zac Efron), who are a mismatch and at loggerheads forever. But both of them have to put their differences aside and work together to stop a criminal mastermind’s drug trafficking operation, that threatens the future of the bay. And Priyanka Chopra plays the criminal mastermind disguised as a club owner.

Baywatch released in USA on May 25, but sank at the US box office too. The makers were hopeful about the film’s prospects in India, owing to her huge popularity here, but looks like even Priyanka Chopra’s presence failed to attract the audiences to the theatres.

For the lifetime collection of the film, we will have to wait and watch.
