Maldives’ Supreme court has ordered release of former President Mohamed Nasheed and other opposition leaders

Maldives’ Supreme Court has ordered the release of nine influential political prisoners, which has made it even more easier for the exiled former leader Mohamed Nasheed to run for president. The Supreme court stated that the trails had been in violation of the constitution of the country, and has ordered to initiate new trails for all of them. Nasheed, had been the first President to be democratically elected through the elections in the country, but he was thrown into jail with the charges of terrorism. But, his trial had been criticized by the United Nations as being unfair and violation of rights.

The Supreme court has said that the judges could have been forced “to conduct politically motivated investigations” in the cases against Nasheed, the Former Vice President of Maldives, Ahmed Adeep and oppositions leaders. Ibrahim Hussian Shihab, the spokesperson for the President took out a statement and said, “While the ruling makes significant implications on various points of constitutional import and criminal justice procedures, it was issued without representation of the state from either the attorney general or the prosecutor general.”

“The administration will work to engage, and consult with, the supreme court in order to comply with the ruling in line with proper procedure and the rule of law.”

Mohamed Nasheed, who is currently in Sri Lanka, wrote on Twitter, “Welcome tonight’s SC ruling calling for the immediate release of political prisoners and the restoration of their civil and political rights. President Yameen must abide by this ruling and resign. Urge all citizens to avoid confrontation and engage in peaceful political activity.”
