International Day for the Eradication of Poverty marks 25th anniversary today

International Day for the Eradication of Poverty observed on 17th October every year. Today is the 25th anniversary of the declaration by the General Assembly resolution of 22 December 1992. It was first observed in 1987 in Paris, France when thousands of people gathered on the Human Rights and Liberties Plaza to pay honour to the victims of poverty, hunger, fear and violence at the commemorative stone by Father Joseph Wresinski. He was the founder of International Movement ATD fourth world. The call to action by Father Joseph Wresinskiinspires the observance of 17th October as poverty eradication day.

Poverty is the unbearable topic for the conversation in India because still, India’s 45% population is below the poverty line. India is fighting with this major problem since Independence. Although the government has come up with various schemes and yojanas to eradicate poverty. However, still, there are most of the unemployed and uneducated people who suffer from poverty in India.

Father Joseph Wresinski recognised that the government tended to ignore the plight of the people who are living in poverty leads to feelings of rejection, shame and humiliation. In the wake of that one of the primary day is recognised the struggles of the impoverished to make their voices heard by the government and the ordinary citizens. Then later the General Assembly declared 17 October as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

The important day to eradicate poverty invites the States to present and promoting the concrete activities with regard to the eradication of poverty.
