CWG 2018: Shreyasi Singh wins Gold Medal in Women’s Double Trap

India has been on an impressive start in shooting with total eight medals including 3 gold, two silver and three bronze medals in the event. On Day 7, Om Mitharval, who had won bronze in 10m air pistol, won another bronze, after he finished in the third position in the event. Now, Shreyasi Singh wins the Gold medal in Women’s Double trap in Gold Coast Australia. Shreyasi wins it in a dramatic shoot-off challenge with Australia’s Emma Cox. Shreyasi shot a total of 96 in four rounds (24+25+22+25). Her partner Varsha Varman missed out on Bronze after shooting 86 (21+25+21+19) across the four series. Australia’s Cox seized the second position while Scotland’s Linda Pearson finished third to take home a bronze medal.

This was the third time when Shreyasi Singh was representing India at the Commonwealth Games. She had previously taken part in the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi also in 2014 Games in Glasgow. However, she had not won any medal in her previous two attempts, finished sixth in trap event and fifth in trap team event in her opening Games but showed significant improvement as she won an individual silver medal in double trap.

On Squash Event, India’s star pair Deepika Pallikal Karthik and Joshna Chinappa have entered the women’s doubles quarter-finals of squash. The pair of Deepika-Joshna defeated the pair of Tessy Evans and Dion Saifery in the pool-C match of the women’s doubles.

This was India’s 12th Gold medal overall and 4th in the shooting. The other three are Manu Bhakar, Heena Sidhu and Jitu Rai. More medals are awaited to come as boxers Mary Kom, Gaurav Solanki, Manoj Kumar, Vikas Krishan, Mohammed Hussamuddin, Naman Tanwar and Amit Phangal are all going to take part in medal events. Mary Kom has the chance to win Silver as she qualified for the final of the 45-48kg boxing category.
