CWG 2018: Mary Kom’s single victory will bring a medal for India

Before starting of Commonwealth Games, Indian boxers have got a good draw. Five-times World Champion and legendary boxer MC Mary Kom have got this draw and now she will consider it as the biggest advantage. Mary Kom will need to win just one match to win a medal, while Vikas Krishna has got a berth in men’s pre-quarterfinals. Mary Com will meet Scotland’s Megan Gordon in the quarterfinals of 48 kg category on April 8. Manipur’s 35-year-old player, who played in the Commonwealth Games for the first time, is a strong contender for the gold medal in a draw that includes only eight boxers. India is one of the leading nations in Commonwealth Games Boxing event.  

On the other hand, Vikas (75kg) has made his place in the last 16, because Manish Kaushik (60kg), who is making his debut, got a bye in the previous match. Asian Games Bronze medalist Satish Kumar (more than 91kg) also got the draw, and he reached the quarter-finals. Pinky Jangra (51kg), who won a bronze medal in Glasgow Games, has also reached the quarterfinals and will compete against England’s Lisa Whiteside on 11 April. Indian Open gold medalist Lavinia Bogohane is the only Indian woman boxer to reach the quarterfinals (69kg) in the first round through Bye. He will clash with Sandy Ryan of England in the quarterfinals.

The youngest member of the men’s team, Naman Tanwar (91kg) will face Tanzania’s Haruna Mwando in their first match on April 6. Manoj Kumar (69kg), who won the gold medal in the 2010 Delhi Games, will start against Nigeria’s Oisa Ummah in their first match in April 5. Muhammad Husamuddin (56 kg) will meet Vanuatu’s Borawara on April 7, while Gaurav Solanki will hit Ghana’s Ananang Ampiyas on April 9. Former World and Asian champion El Sita Devi (60kg) with Kimberley Guitens, while Indian Open gold medalist Amit Pangal (49kg) will meet Tait Sullamanu of Ghana.
