Shivaji Jayanti is the birthday of Shivaji Maharaj. This year Shivaji Jayanti will be celebrated on February 19, 2018. He is known as Shivaji in Maharashtra. This is celebrated in large-scale in Maharashtra. His name was kept Shivaji as his parents use to worship the local Goddess named Shivai. He was the creator of the Maratha nation. The military and civil administration was of greatest importance to Shivaji. Shivaji was successful in carving out a small kingdom by defeating the people misusing their powers. Shivaji with his power and knowledge was able to set an empire. He is hero not only for the people of Maharashtra but also for the people of India as well.

Shivaji was born on February 19, 1627. His father was the chief of Bijapur Kingdom. He was not allowed to take charge of any fort. The holy books of India was introduced to him by his mother. Shivaji got a lot of information from his father’s unsuccessful attempts. Shivaji got military knowledge from commanders like Gomaji Naik and Baji Pasalkar. Young Shivaji was motivated, enthusiastic and energetic. At the age of 17, he captured Torna Fort of Bijapur. The Western Ghats along the Konkan Coast were also under his control by 1654.

In order to take off Shivaji’s rise to power, Adilshah arrested Shahji, his father by deceitful means and had armies sent against Shivaji and his elder brother Sambaji. Shivaji extended his empire towards south to Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. In order to regain one of his forts, Kondana, he appointed his most trusted general Tanaji Malusare. The battle that followed between the Marathas and the Mughals came to be known as the Maratha war of Independence where the Marathas were successful in regaining the control of the fort.
