Sawan Shivratri 2017 is being celebrated across India today. Shivratri comes twice in a year. As per Hindu calendar, one comes in the month of Phagun and one in a month of Sawan or Shrawan. Shivratri is being a celebration of Shiva and Parvati’s marriage. According to some people, Shivratri is celebrated because Lord Shiva consumed the poison to save the whole world and so powerful was the impact of that poison is that his neck turned blue and named as Neelkanth. This festival is not only celebrated in India and Nepal but also in parts of West Indies. Shivaratri which falls during Shrawan month is known as Sawan Shivaratri. Famous Shiva temples in North India, Kashi Vishwanath, Neelkanth and Badrinath Dham arrange special Pujas and Shiva Darshan during Sawan month.

Thousands of Shiva devotees visit Shiva shrines during Sawan month and perform Gangajal Abhishekam. Many people bring kawad from Haridwar that is they bring Gangajal from Haridwar by walking to their hometown and do puja on Shivratri in lord shiva temple near to their house with leaves of bel patra, flowers, bhang (cannabis), Ganga water (holy water), milk, curd and honey and this puja is known as Gangajal Abhishekam.

They did fast to get a good health and wealth and also for the long life of their children.
