Maha Shivratri is a Hindu festival that is celebrated annually. On this day, Lord Shiva is paid honor. This festival marks life above darkness. Mostly Hindu festivals are celebrated during the day, there this festival is celebrated during the night. During this festival, it is experienced that people do introspective focus, fasting, meditation on Shiva, self study, social harmony and an all night vigil at Shiva temples. This year this festival is observed on February 13, 2018. This festival means great night of Shiva. On this day, Lord Shiva is remembered by chanting, prayers.

According to history, this was the day when Lord Shiva drank poisonous negativity to protect the world. According to some legends, this was the night when Lord Shiva performed heavenly dance of creation, preservation and destruction. The chanting of hymns, the reading of Shiva scriptures and the chorus of devotees joins this cosmic dance and remembers Shiva’s presence everywhere. According to some people, this was the day when Lord Shiva and Parvati got married. The dance has great significance in the history of India. Many women do fasting in order to honor Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva is a God of destruction and is very powerful.

Maha Shivratri festival is very significant for devotees of Shiva. Devotees of Shiva are highly prohibited to wear black color. It is said that Lord Shiva don’t like black colored clothes. Lord Shiva is fond of milk and milk products. One can offer kheer to Lord Shiva but usually on Maha Shivratri one can offer Bhaang to him. One must chant the name of Lord Shiva and the mantra of Lord Shiva saying Om Namah Shivaya. The devotees who are observing the fast should take early morning bath. Every Hindu devotee wish to go to Kashi and celebrate the Maha Shivratri there.
