After nearly a hundred years of British rule, Our country was liberated on August 15, 1947. After that, George VI was made the head of state and Earl Mountbatten as Governor General. Although the country was free, it did not have its own constitution. The law of India was based on the Government of India Act-1935. A draft committee was constituted on August 29, 1947, to draft the Constitution of India under the leadership of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar. The draft committee had prepared the constitution and handed it to the Constituent Assembly on November 4, 1947. The committee took two years, 11 months, 18 days to prepare it. The Constitution was finally effected on January 26, 1950. It was chosen on 26th January because in 1930 the Indian National Congress had declared India as a full swaraj.

  1. January  26 is celebrated as Republic Day because on January 26, 1930, in the meeting held in Lahore, the ‘Full Swaraj Day’ was announced. That is why this day is celebrated as Republic Day.
