Guru nanak Dev Jyanti 2017: Know more about Gurupurab in Sikhism

Gurupurab is a festival celebrated by the Sikh Community, to mark the birth anniversary of Sikh Guru. 4th November is a birthday of Guru Nanak Dev Ji who the first guru of Sikhs or founder of Sikhism. Birth Date of Guru Nanak Dev is also known as Guru Nanak Jayanti,  Guru Nanak Gurupurab, or Guru Nanak’s Prakash Utsav. It is important festival celebrated in the all around the globe by Sikh community. Guru Nanak Dev Ji taught every person should be treated equally as Waheguru (God) created everyone and present in every soul. Guru Nanak also taught the equality in the Sikh Langar (kitchen) so that in every gurudwara has a langar where all people offered free meal regardless of their color or religion. Everyone can eat vegetarian food together in the langar.

Nagar kirtan is organized by the management of every gurudwara, ahead of celebration to mark the guru Nanak Jayanti. A number of devotees participate in the Nagar kirtan and sweep the roads where ever the Nagar kirtan will go.  People perform Gatka Art in which they wear traditional clothes and promote traditional weapons. Devotees visit Gurudwara to offer prayers and listen Gurubani of Guru Granth Sahib. After that, they enjoy the eatable in langar organized by every Gurudwara.
