Gudi Padwa is the main festival of Maharashtrian people. Gudi Padwa is celebrated as this is the first day of the year for the Maharashtrians. People celebrate this day with great enthusiasm and people are usually dressed in a Traditional dress. This year Gudi Padwa will fall on March 18. People decorate their houses and make rangoli. Rangolis are made of different colors and each color holds different significance. This festival is known by different names and it is also celebrated in the North East state of Manipur. Different types of foods and sweets are also prepared on this day.

This festival marks the end of one festival and the beginning of the other festival. This festival welcomes the spring season. This is one of the most popular harvesting festival in India. This festival is celebrated on the day when the Sun is above the point of intersection of the equator. This day also celebrates the defeat of Ravana by Lord Rama. After defeating him, Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya. Shivaji Maharaj started the celebration of this festival after his victory. On Gudi Padwa, people worship Gudi which is a bamboo stick with the Silk saree. An inverted pot of silver or gold is also put at the top.

The house is cleaned and people wear new dresses on this day. The traditional food of Maharashtra is prepared and many places even has the food events. Many people buy gold and silver jewellery on this day. Buying jewellery is considered as the best ritual to do. Many historical events also take place. People prepare different types of rangoli. Many people exchange gifts and celebrate this festival with friends and family. On this day, even women go on ride on two-wheelers and perform the Gudi Padwa Shobha Yatra. This is witness mainly in Maharashtra.
