Visva Bharati University convocation, Narendra Modi, Sheikh Hasina and Mamta Banerjee visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sheikh Hasina, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh,  Chief Minister of Calcutta, Mamta Banerjee, attended the convocation ceremony of the Visva Bharati University in West Bengal today. Narendra Modi talked about Rabindra Nath, and told the atendees that the writer is recognized around the world, and hence is a global citizen.  He remembered his visit to Tajikistan, where he unveiled a statue of the literary legend. He shared that Tagor believed everyone is born to do something in their lives, and education is a way in which children can be encouraged to achieve their aims.

He welcomes Sheikh Hasina, and said that even though India and Bangladesh are two different countries, their interests are mutual. Sheik Hasina is on a two day tour to Bengal, and is going to hold talks with Narendra Modi on various topics that are going to strengthen the bond between the two countries. The government is also going to renovate Rabindranath’s residence “Kuthibaari” in Kushtiya district of Bangladesh.

Sheikh Hasina did talk about the controversial subject of Rohingya refugees, and said that Bangladesh has allowed them inside the country on humanitarian grounds, but does want them to return to their homeland. She requested Myanmar to take back the refugees.
