The Supreme Court has observed and asked the Election Commission of West Bengal about the large number of uncontested seats in the Gram Panchayat elections that too place in May of this year. It has ordered the EC to provide it with the exact number of seats that have been left empty by tomorrow without any delay. It suggested that if the Panchayat seats are empty, it means that the chapter 9 of constitution of India is not being followed, or isn’t working for the citizen and the government. Birbhum, Bankura, Murshidabad and Purva Bardhaman are the places that have the most empty seats.
The court asked, “What is puzzling is that of 48,000-gram Panchayat seats more than 16,000 go uncontested.” It has asked the EC to tell them the reason why the seats went uncontested during, Zilla Panchayat, Panchayat Samiti and gram panchayat elections.
TMC won the three tier elections that were organized on May 14 . Although, its is not alarming to see uncontested seats in Panchayat seats, but this time, the number of the empty seats is too much to be ignored and that is why it has gotten the attention of the supreme court. This is also going to be a shock for the Mamta Government. It is yet to be seen if the Election commission is going to be able to show the statics in proper manner, and give the reason of such shortcomings. Since, failure to follow the constitution is a major blow for the government, which should be more considerate about how the such things came to pass. It is also yet to be seen what Chief Minister Mamta Banejee herself is going to say about the situation.
