Statehood day is celebrated on February 20 each year, by the people of Arunachal Pradesh, on the occasion when it gained statehood in 1987, 20 February.  North East Frontier Agency (NEFA), which was made in 1954. And then it became the Union Territory of Arunacha Pradesh in 1972. Shilong had been prescribed as its headquaters until 1974, after which Itanagar became the headquarters instead. Arunachal Pradesh came under the Governor of the provincial government of Assam, and the state, itself had been dependent on the Northeast Frontier Tracts (which later was known as NEFA). The powers which had been granted to the Governor of Assam, a constitutional post and an agent of the President of India. Mizoram also achieved its statehood on this day, and celebrates it along with Arunachal Pradesh.

NEFA, changed its name to, Arunachal Pradesh and then, in 1972 Arunachal Pradesh became the Union Territory of the Republic of India. It then came under the chief commissioner. Arunchal Pradesh attained statehood after the 55th amendment in the constitution was passed on 20 February, 1987.

The day is celebrated by the citizens of the state, and even the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, wished the people a happy Statehood day, writing on his twitter, “Best wishes to the people of Arunachal Pradesh on their Statehood day.” He also posted a photograph with further greetings, which stated, “The Warm Nature of the people of Arunachal pradesh is extremely endearing. I pray that the state continues to scale more heights of development.” Along with him, other people have greeted each other on the day, with blessings and wishes for having a good day ahead.” For Mizoram, the Prime Minister wrote, “My best wishes for the development journey of Mizoram.”
