Level 3 fire broke out at the Crystal Tower residential apartments near Hindmata Cinema in Mumbai’s Parel area on Wednesday. No damage to life and property has been reported so far. A total of 10 fire tenders have rushed to the spot to douse the blaze, the BMC disaster management officials said. A rescue operation to evacuate the feared trapped has also been launched. “People trapped inside the tower are being rescued using a crane. The fire, which was classified as Level 2, has now become a Level 3 one.

The number of people trapped inside the Crystal Tower is not known. The fire brigade control room got a message about the blaze on the twelfth floor of the building at 8.32 am, an official said.

On a related note, the blaze came days after the city witnessed another level 2 fire at a godown in the Parel area on August 13. On December 29, 2017, a massive fire broke out in Mumbai’s Kamala Mills compound leaving 14 dead and several other injured. As many as 11 people have been arrested in connection to the incident after registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder under section 304 II of the IPC against the accused.

How did it happen?

The fire was initially categorized as level 2 (medium) but later upgraded to level 3 (major). On August 13, a level II fire had broken out at a godown in the Parel area and 12 fire tenders were rushed to douse it.
