Ranbir Kapoor talks about Bhramastra, failed project Jagga Jasoos and more in recent interview

Ranbir Kapoor’s Sanju, is going to be released on  June 29 2018. The movie is directed by Raj Kumar Hirani, and also stars Anushka Sharma, Sonam Kapoor, Paresh Rawal, Manisha Koirala and Vicky Kaushal. Ranbir has been doing promotions for the movie, and recently sat for an interview with Film Companion’s Anupama Chopra. He talked about his career, and upcoming projects. He acknowledged that he’s had a stream of unsuccessful films in recent years, which has lessened his stardom considerably. Jagga Jasoos, the ambitious comedy mystery movie with Anurag Kashyap was a colossal flop for the actor, and he agreed that the experience was harsh for his bank and heart.

He wasn’t evasive of his failure, but stressed that he is going to make more entertainment based movies. Ranbir has always worked in smaller movies, and his performances in all of them has been critically acclaimed, but it has never gotten him to the kind of exposure that he now wants. There is no stability in movies and it is possible that his decisions could backfire at him. His next movie, Bhramastra, directed by Aayan Mukerje and co-starring his now girlfriend, Alia Bhatt, is a “romantic fairytale” according to him. Its a supernatural movie, with romance elements.

The movie is being made on a large scale, and even though Aayan is a capable director, having made one of the highest grossing romance movies of the decade, Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani, these sort of projects can be risky and can lead to even more loss if the audience rejects it. But, with the humongous success of Baahubahli, its possible that people could be more accepting of a supernatural movie.

His next project is with director Luv Ranjan, co-starring Ajay Devgn. The details about the movie aren’t revealed but its reportedly a romantic drama. Ranbir has always been very good at romance and drama, and this looks like it could be easier for him to adapt, and since Ajay Devgn is also starring in the project, a good Box office business is assured. The female lead for the movie has not been decided yet.

The most interesting aspect of the interview was the discussion of  Pay parity in Bollywood. Even though Ranbir said that if an actress like Deepika Padukone works with him, she should get a larger sum of pay, because she’s a bigger, and more influential star than him. But he didn’t seem to confirm that he is going to be willing to lower his pay in support of the actress’s or fight for equal income. But, he is clearly supportive of the women, and is able to see the problem, which can’t be said the same for many actors of his generation.
