Rajasthan passes bill that gives death penalty for rape of girls under 12 years

Rajasthan has passed the bill that’ll allow the death penalty for the rape of girls under 12 years. It is the second state to pass such bill, after Madhya Pradesh, last year, and even Haryana has said this Feburary that it is going to bring in a similar legislation. Other states that have been thinking over the bill are Maharashtra and Karnataka. According to The amendment bill, which was tabled in the Rajasthan assembly on Wednesday.

The Criminal Laws (Rajasthan Amendment) Bill, 2018, is going to add the section section 376-AA in the Indian Penal Code (IPC), will have the following: “Punishment for rape on a woman up to twelve years of age. Whoever commits rape on a woman up to twelve years of age shall be punished with death, or rigorous imprisonment for a term which shall not be less than fourteen years but which may extend to imprisonment for life which shall mean imprisonment for the remainder of that person’s natural life, and shall also be liable to fine.”

The actions have been taken in the wake of recent rise in the incident of rape in the country, with Haryana being the centre of controversy for the some months. This will probably encourage other states to add the bill so that such actions are discouraged and the criminals get the punishment that is appropriate to their crimes. Another progressive step to stop the heinous crime against women and girls.
