In a random decision, Punjab government has now decided to impose tax on pet animals, meaning the owners will now have to pay for their animals. For the pets that people usually keep, dogs, cats, sheep and even deer, the government has now set a tax of Rs 250 annually. The bigger pets, however will be charged more, and for animals like buffalo, bull, camel, horse, cow etc the owners will have to pay up to Rs 500 in tax each year. The Government has also decided that it’ll be releasing “branding code”, a kind of unique identification for the animal.
The branding code will be put into the animal, which will make it easier for people and the authorities to identify them from a large data basis, a notice released from the government has stated. The notice was released by the Department of Local Administration, which is chaired by Navjot Singh Sidhu, the state minister.
The news has sent the social media abuzz with confusion, and people are presenting their views on the subject, asking the government why they needed to take such decision and some of the users have protested the ruling, calling it disgusting and nonsensical, and asked for the law to be taken down.
