POCSO ACT, President Ram Nath Kovind gives his nod to the ordinance which will give death penalty to rapists

President of India, Ram Nath Kovind today promulgated the ordinance to make amends to the POCSO Act, which will now include a death sentence to the for those who are found guilty of raping a child who is below 12 years old. The Union cabinet had yesterday approved the ordinance that is going to allow the courts to sentence people who rape children who are below the age of 12, to death sentence. In light of horrific rape cases across India and the growing frequency of violence against women, this order is going to create much needed change in the judiciary to get justice for the children who are subjected to such crimes.

People who commit rape against girls who are underage, specifically from 16 to 12, are going to get severe punishment, while the perpetrators who rape any girl below 12 is definitely going to be given the death sentence.

There are also going to be amends in the punishment that is given for rape, as the sentence will be elongated from rigorous imprisonment of seven years to 10 years, extendable to life imprisonment. For gangrape of a girl who is below the age of 16, the culprit is going to be punished with a life sentence. The much needed amends come after the shocking gangrape and murder in Kathua, Jammu and Kashmir, and other instance of brutality against women and female children.
