The famous National Herald newspaper is all set to be relaunched by the Congress Party today in Bengaluru. The newspaper which was founded by nation’s first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru has been in headlines for the past some years given the controversial financial investments made by the organisation after its shutdown in 2008.
The newspaper was first printed from Lucknow on September 9, 1938, and was edited at that time by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. The launch shall be done by Vice President Hamid Ansari today in some hours at Bengaluru. The event shall also be attended by Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi (who is also one of the main accomplices in the investigations going on about National Herald along with his mother and Congress President Sonia Gandhi).
The newspaper which is going to be relaunched again shall see its commemorative edition to mark the 70th year of Independence. The event is slotted to take place at Ambedkar Bhavan on Millers Road in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The paper is supposed to be published weekly from the National Capital. However, the online web edition ‘Nationalherald.com’ is being operated under the leadership of Neelabh Misra as editor for past one year.
President Pranab Mukherjee shall then do an official launch of the edition and formal print re-launch of the newspaper on June 20 in Delhi.
The newspaper was brought to headlines with Subramanian Swamy’s allegations of an interest-free loan of Rs 90.25 crore granted to Associated Journals Limited (AJL), owner of the National Herald newspaper, claiming that the loan was done away without being paid. It was further alleged that Rahul – Sonia had thus directed the money towards Young Indian – making the accounts of the party very blotched and laundering money.
On the other hand, Congress party seems to be launched in a nationwide campaign to remind the people of the National Herald legacy along with the party’s and Gandhi-Nehru clan’s contributions towards the independence struggle.
