Narendra Modi in Malaysia, meets leader Dr. Mahathir Mohamad

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reached Kaula Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, as a stop before he travels to Singapore. Yesterday, he visited Indonesia, as a part of his three country tour in accordance with India’s Act East Policy. He met President Joko Widodo, and in the joint press statement announced that India supports Indonesia in its fight against terrorism. He also condemned the recent terrorist attacks in the country, that caused death of many civilians. Today, Modi met Malaysian Leader Mahathir Bin Mohamad. He is going to leave for Singapore later in the day.

The two leaders are reportedly going to have a conversation to strengthen the bilateral relationship between the two countries, most prominently in the trade and investment areas. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said that the leaders had a very productive conversation of views that are going to build a stronger relationship between the two countries.  PM Modi also congratulated Dr. Mahathir on assuming the post of Prime Minister of Malaysia.

Jawed Ashraf, India’s High Commissioner to Singapore, said that since this is Modi’s second visit to the country, it holds a significance because he is going to deliver a speech at the Shangri-La dialouge, which is going to be crucial as India has been very much involved because of ACT East Policy. The people of Singapore are anticipating the arrival of the Indian leader, and there will be a more media scrutiny at his actions when he is there. Modi wrote on his twitter account about meeting Dr. Mahatir Mohamad, “Glad to have met Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. I thank him for the warm welcome. We had productive discussions on further cementing India-Malaysia ties.”
