A MiG-29 aircraft crashed and caught fire at Goa’s Dabolim airport, on Wednesday, even though the pilot ejected to safety as the aircraft began to descend to the ground. Dabolim airport was shut momentarily because of the mishap and as the fire was being extinguished. According to the reports, this is the first MiG-29 aircraft that has been lost by the Indian Army, and the twitter account also confirmed the accident, citing that the pilot was under training, lot control of the aircraft and taken it off the course while he was trying to take off from the runway.
BCH Negi, the director of Dabolim airport confirmed that they had to close the airport for more than an hour as the process of extinguishing the aircraft was going on. The pilot was indeed safe, having ejected when the pace of the aircraft began to dwindle. Some flights were also delayed because of the accident.
All the operations that had been halted because of the incident then resumed as they were supposed to go on. The best thing about the incident was that fortunately, no one was hurt and the fire was extinguished properly so that other flights could take off without any hassle.
The MiG-29 had been imported from Russia, in 2004, along with Admiral Gorshkov aircraft carrier. There haven’t been any reported accidents related to the aircraft in the news, and this is the first instance in which the aircraft skidded and had to be vacated before it caught fire.
