Manipur Landslide Today: claims lives of eight children in Tamenglong district

Three devastating landslides in Tamenglong district of Manipur claimed the lives of eight children. Five children, belonging to the same family died in New Salem, Tamenglong, as the Landslide hurtled down, and even houses were swept away down the mountains because of the force of the calamity. Eyewitnesses have said that the children were dragged away by the water that tore through from areas. Two siblings were also taken in the wrath of the landslide in the nearby region. A mother and her song were also the victims of the sudden calamity in Neigailuang, Tamenglong ward no.2.

The work to recover bodies from the debris has begun, as police is trying to clear up the area and Firefighters have also lend their help to control the situation. The photographs from the site show the wreckage the calamity has caused, with mud, trees and other objects fallen in the ruins. The police and people have gathered around the site, but because of the steep slope, the work is taking time.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh, expressed sadness at the calamity, as he wrote on Twitter, “I am deeply saddened to know that Nine precious life lost due to land slide at 3 places in Tamenglong Head Quarter, till now 7 bodies have been recovered 2 bodies of children yet to recovered. Rescue operations is on.” Union Minister of State (Ind Charge) for Development of North Eastern Region, Dr Jiendra Singh also took to twitter to share condolences with the people who had suffered the tragedy, as he wrote, “Saddened to learn, 9 precious lives lost due to landslide at 3 places in Tamenglong, . Appreciate CM Sh taking personal interest in Rescue operations”. The rescue operation is still going on, as there are two children whose bodies are still to be taken out of the ruins.
