Man arrested for killing aunt with ice pick

A 35-year-old man was arrested for murdering his aunt with an ice pick and stealing Rs 5,500 in west Delhi, police said on Saturday.

The accused Lalit Chandna, a resident of Jahangir Puri in east Delhi, was arrested on Friday after he confessed to his crimes during interrogation.

The incident came to light on Thursday evening when the deceased’s daughter Marlin David informed police about the murder in the Moti Nagar area.

Police zeroed in on Chandna after Marlin listed him as a suspect in her statement, saying that she had refused to lend him some money a month ago.

“After police teams examined the CCTV footages of nearby houses, Chandna was seen going towards the deceased, Priscilla David’s house on the day of the crime. He was traced and interrogated. Initially he kept misleading the interrogators but later broke down,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Vijay Kumar said.

Chandna, who sells hosiery items in a weekly market, was in a financial crisis. After his cousin sister Marlin refused to lend him money, he planned to steal money from his aunt.

“Thus, on Thursday he reached her residence in Moti Nagar where she stayed alone. He murdered her by stabbing her multiple times with an ice pick. He then escaped with the looted money of Rs 5,500 and some artificial jewellery, thinking it was made of gold,” the officer added.
