On Thursday, Madras High Court said that there would not be any floor test conducted in the assembly till further orders of the court. The floor test has postponed until the further court orders that disposed of all petitions challenging the disqualification of AIADMK legislators who are the key to the survival of the state government. As per the reports, the final decision of the disqualification matter and floor test would be held in the next hearing on 4th October.
The Madras court’s ruling has come after petitions challenging Tamil Nadu assembly speaker P Dhanpal’s order for disqualifying 18 MLA’s of AIADMK party. According to the earlier reports, eight of the 18 MLA’s were moved to the court on Monday for challenging the action that has been taken against them under the anti-defection law. And all the dissident MLAs had condemned the speaker’s order as ‘unauthorised’ and ‘illegal’.
However, the legislator’s disqualification insured the EPS government against any embarrassment if the ruling AIADMK government had to prove its majority in a floor test as per the demand of opposition party DMK. While the DMK party had also petitioned the court to convene the assembly and ask CM Palaniswami to prove his the majority. As per the reports, there are 234 members in a state assembly from which around 113 supports CM Palaniswami. So, the government will fall short of a majority if 18 rebel lawmakers decide to vote against them.
