Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswathi passes away at the age of 82

Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswathi, the 69th pontiff of the Kanchi Mutt, died on Wednesday in Tamil Nadu’s Kanchipuram at the age of 82. Jayendra had been admitted in the hospital, after he complained that he’d been experiencing problem in breathing, but he had been in poor health for over a year. Jayendra had been born on July 18, 1935, and was the leader of the Kanchi Mutt, which is also known as the Hindu monastery that had been established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century and had a huge patrons in South India. He had succeeded Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswati Swamigal and had been granted the title Sri Jayendra Saraswathi on March 22, 1954.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was saddened by the news and wrote on twitter, “Deeply anguished by the passing away of Acharya of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam Jagadguru Pujyashri Jayendra Saraswathi Shankaracharya. He will live on in the hearts and minds of lakhs of devotees due to his exemplary service and noblest thoughts. Om Shanti to the departed soul.”

The vice president of India also shared a tribute on twitter, “I pay my respects to Kanchi peethadhipathi Shri Jayendra Saraswati who attained moksha. His contribution for the welfare of mankind and in promoting spirituality will always be an inspiration for others.”

Finance Minister Arun Jaitely wrote, “I pay my respects to Kanchi peethadhipathi Shri Jayendra Saraswati who attained moksha. His contribution for the welfare of mankind and in promoting spirituality will always be an inspiration for others.”

Mamata Banerjee wrote, “Saddened at the Mahasamadhi of Kanchi Acharya Pujya Jayendra Saraswati ji.”
