Kabaddi player shot, injured in Delhi over match score

An 18-year-old kabaddi player was shot and injured following a dispute over the score in a match, police said on Monday.

Avinash Moriya, 18, was shot at in Dakshinpuri area of south Delhi on Sunday night by two persons watching a kabaddi match, Deputy Commissioner of Police Romil Baaniya said.

“A bullet grazed his skull and he was rushed to Batra Hospital. He was operated upon and is now stable,” the officer said.

Avinash’s father Daya Ram said the Class 11 student was in the Intensive Care Unit and doctors said the next 72 hours were critical.

“My son can’t talk. Today (Monday), he made effort to hold my hand but couldn’t,” he told IANS.

Avinash would undergo an operation on Tuesday as bullet shrapnel were stuck in his eye, said Daya Ram, who drives a taxi.

Daya Ram said he had been running from pillar to post to arrange the money for the surgery, adding that he had paid around Rs two lakh in 24 hours to the hospital for his son’s treatment.

On Sunday evening, he recalled, Avinash left for the kabaddi match in a ground barely 100 metres from his house.

“I was standing in the street when I heard a loud sound. I thought the children may have burst a firecracker,” Daya Ram said, adding that he ran towards the ground when someone told him that his son had been shot.

He demanded the arrested of those who shot at his son.

Baaniya said police teams have been formed to nab the two accused who have since been identified.
