JNU student leader Umar Khalid receives death threats, Jignesh Mewani also alleges the same

Umar Khalid, the student leader of Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi, has alleged that he has received death treats from a fugitive gangster named Ravi Pujari. Umar has filed a compliant to the Delhi Police yesterday. He also tweeted about the complaint, writing on his account, “Filed a complaint with @DelhiPolice regarding Ravi Pujari’s death threat to Jignesh and me. He said that I am on his HIT LIST! I have asked for police protection, given the fact that this is the same person who had previously also issued similar threats of killing me in Feb 2016.” However, this isn’t the first time that he has been threatened with violence, as his father, Syed Qasim Illyas Rasool, had filed a compliant in 2016, that he had recieved a phone call, in which the speaker threatned to kill his son, if he doesn’t the country as soon as possible.

The threats seems to have erupted because the police had been investigating him, union president Kanhaiya Kumar and Anirban Bhattacharya, for instigating an event in protest for the hanging of Afzal Guru, who was the central convict in the 2001 parliament attack. The even had been controversial, with many voices calling it out as anti national, and a disgrace to the people who had lost their lives in the attack. However, the controversy did little to stop the authorities, and Afzal was hanged in 2103.

Jinesh Mewani, the Dalit politican from Gujarat, tweeted that has also revieved threats from unknown sources, and Umar is also a target, he wrote, “Day 3, threat call continues from Ravi Pujari. Today again I received a threat call on my original number from a person introducing himself as Ravi Pujari frm Australia and also sent a text saying – “stop giving provocative speeches or will shot you. Umar Khalid is also in list”
