The BJP named Jai Ram Thakur as legislature party leader in Himachal Pradesh on Sunday to make him the new chief minister of the state. The central observer of Bharatiya Janata Party, Narendra Singh Tomar announced Thakur’s name after a meeting of BJP MLAs. According to the reports, discussion on Thakur’s selection was held between the party’s central observers Nirmala Sitharaman and Narendra Singh Tomar, BJP core group members, and RSS functionaries. Today while addressing a press conference, Thakur thanked his party’s leaders after accepting his new position. He also promised to leave “no stone unturned” to meet the expectations of the Himachal’s people.
After the BJP swept the recently-concluded state election and suffered a shock loss in Prem Kumar Dhumal’s defeat, the race for chief ministership opened up. The initial choice of Bharatiya Janata Party for CM is Dhumal, but Dhumal himself said he was out of the race on Saturday.
Jai Ram Thakur was Born in 1965 and comes from Tandi in Mandi district. He was graduated from Government College in Mandi and from there he started his political career with student cell, Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). In 1986, he was appointed as Joint Secretary of the Himachal Pradesh ABVP. Also, he also held several positions with the youth wing of the BJP. Apart from that, he has served as Vice President of Himachal Pradesh in 2003- 2005 and later he was President of the state in 2006 to 2009.
Thakur’s first victory came in 1998 in the legislative election. He was elected to the state assembly from Chachiot District. With the state government, he worked in several state committees with various positions. He served as Chairman, General Development Committee & Education Committee, Vice-Chairman, State Civil Supplies Corporation Ltd, and the head of Rural Planning Committee.
Thakur has special interests in organising blood donation camps and other social services. Moreover, in his free time, he is used to listens old songs.
