INX Media case: CBI granted Karti Chidambaram’s custody till March 12 2018

CBI has been successful in getting custody of Karti Chidambaram till March 12 2018 from a special court today. Karti has already spent nine days in the custody of the CBI. This new extension is because the organization has found new material that further incriminates Kart in the case. Karti is facing the charges for using his stature and money to acquire Foreign Investment Promotional Board clearance for the INX Media firm in the year, 2007. INX media has itself been mired in taking bribes and funds from various other international sources as well.

Karti’s arrest was made possible after the testimony by Indrani and Peter Mukerjea, who confessed of giving him bribe of Rs 7 Lakh to help the clearance of FIPB. Indrani Mukerjea and her husband are also facing charges for the murder of their daughter, Sheena Bora, in which Indrani is a prime instigator.

Karti has been granted the Interim Protection from the Delhi High court after being denied yesterday.  Defense counsel Abhishek Manu Singhvi has defended his client, saying that the CBI is making up evidence and has no grounds of keeping Karti in the custody for so long. The reason for this extension, according to Additional solicitor general Tushar Mehta, is that a CD and few other documents have been found that have relation to the case and will have to bee sent to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory to examine their authenticity.
