India China Doklam: Ajit Doval to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping with BRICS NSAs

Today, Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval will reach Beijing to attend the Brics two day security meet. Along with his BRICS counterparts will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping tomorrow and will hold talks on India China Doklam. And it is to be seen if Ajit Doval and China’s top diplomat Yang Jiechi will meet on the sidelines of the summit. India should not pin hopes on Doval’s visit to resolve the border stand-off an editorial said. And the troops from the both sides should withdraw as Doklam belongs to its ally Bhutan.

Bhutan is a Himalayan nation which has no diplomatic ties with China. It has also protested against the road construction by Chinese troops in Doklam. A road construction in Doklam at the tri-junction of China, India, and Bhutan holds strategic importance to all three. Therefore in June Army stopped road construction by Chinese troops, leading to the standoff that is now in its second month.

On Wednesday China made clear that India’s pullback from Doklam remained the “precondition” for any dialogue on the issue where the five-nation bloc traditionally discusses counterterrorism and security issues, assumes significance in view of the dragging border row between India and China on the eve of Indian NSA Ajit Doval’s China visit to attend the BRICS security summit in Beijing. As per the reports, their meeting will take place in the afternoon. Beginning from Thursday Ajit Doval will attend the two-day BRICS National Security Advisers meet in Beijing. The meet, where the five-nation bloc traditionally discusses counterterrorism and security issues, assumes significance in the view of festering border row between India and China.
