The most awaited verdict of the Gujarat High Court on 2002 Godhra case to be pronounced today. On the set of appeals challenging convictions and acquittals by a special SIT court in the train burning case, 2002 Godhra verdict is now to be released today by the Gujarat High Court. As per the reports in 2011, the SIT ( special investigation team) court convicted 31 people and acquitted 63 in the case. Whereas 11 people were sentenced to death and 20 were given life imprisonment.
On 27 February 2002, the S-6 coach of the Sabarmati Express was burnt at the Godhara Station in which around 59 people and mostly the Kar sevaks returning from the Ayodhya were travelling. Later, the commision was set up by the Government of Gujarat to investigate the incident of the burning train. It is widely known as the Gujarat riots that results into the widespread loss of life, homelessness and destruction of property. The official figures estimated the casualties of 790 Muslims and 254 Hindus to upwards 2,000 casualties.
In this case, the court had convicted 31 people after accepting the prosecution’s argument that there was a conspiracy behind the incidents. As per the reports, all the 31 were under the IPC section attempt to murder case and criminal conspiracy. And now finally the verdict to be pronounced today by the Gujarat court.
