Geminid Meteor Shower: Best time to witness decade’s best Light show

The biggest meteor shower of 2017 is scheduled to happen on December 13-14. The Geminid meteor shower is going to be one of the most spectacular meteor shower of 2017. An interesting fact about Geminids shower is its association with an asteroid called the 3200 Phaethon. Having an asteroid as the base of a meteor shower provides an excellent source of dust grains which will burn once they come in contact with Earth atmosphere, according to NASA. That’s why it is also called Phaethon a “rock comet.”

Mostly the meteors names are associated with the name of a constellation. Gemide meteor is named after its constellation Gemini. The Geminids will be visible all over the world. No matter where you are viewing you can see the Geminids.  NASA says the meteor shower will reach its peak between, December 13 at 7:30 PM to 4 a.m. On December 14 it will dawn on the morning.

NASA’s Meteoroid Environment Officer, Bill Cooke said, “With Perseids of August obscured by bright moonlight, the Geminids will be the best shower this year.” Officials also said that the shower will occur by 2 AM on 14 December. At this time the Gemini constellation will be almost overhead and number of meteors can reach up to 120 per hour at 2 AM.

With great weather conditions this year, you can Witness the light show every minute or two on an average using Sky Telescope. NASA will broadcast live streaming of the Geminid shower from its Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama at sunset, The virtual telescope will broadcast it through a robotic telescope. According to the NASA it will start between midnight and sunrise. If you don’t feel like going outside or it’s cloudy, You can watch live streaming on NASA’s official website.
