Ganesh Chaturthi 2018: Quick and easy recipe to make Modak

Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations looks incomplete without mouth watering Modak. Lord Ganesh is always portrayed as sweet lover and his favorite sweet was the ukadiche Modak. So let’s add some magic of sweet in your kitchen with this quick and easy Modak recipe. There can be variety of ways to make the dumplings, you can steam or fry them.  The puja will include offering of twenty one modaks to divine being and as prasad to the devotees. You can try your hands from traditional recipe to modern recipes in very easy steps at home.

Traditional Modak 

Ingredients for traditional Modak

  • 1 cup rice flour
  • 1 cup fresh grated coconut
  • 1.5 Cup water
  • 1/4 tsp oil or ghee
  • 3/4 cups of powder or grated jaggery
  • 1/2 tsp poppy seeds
  • Pinch of nutmeg powder
  • 3-4 Cardamons

How to make Traditional Modak 

To make filling add some ghee in a pan and add poppy seeds, cardamon powder and nutmeg powder. Saute the mixture for a minute. Now add fresh coconut and grated/powder Jaggery. Mix well and cook it on low flame. Once jaggery starts to melt,stir occasionally and cook till the moisture begins to dry. Make sure not to over cook it as jaggery tends to get hard if over cooked. Once mixture is cooked, keep it for cooling.

How to make outer cover and steam ukadiche/traditional modak

Take a deep pan add water, oil and salt and let the water come to boil. Now add the rice flour, stir quickly and mix it well to blend rice flour into water. Remove the pan from the stove and cover it with lid for about 5 minutes. After five minutes take the dough in a plate or bowl and start kneading it. Once dough gets smooth texture, make small balls from it.  Keep these balls aside covered for a while.

Now keep water for steaming in a pan. Slightly grease the pan with oil or ghee. Take a ball and flatten, use your fingers and make is shallow disc, apply a little oil in your palms. Once the dough is flat and shallow add filling in the center of it. Close it with edges by joining them. Once you made enough balls, keep modaks balls in a steamer. Cover the pan with lid and let it cooked for 10-15 minutes. Once Ukadiche modak are cooked, add some ghee while serving. Now enjoy the delightful flavors of your modak.
