Dalveer Bhandari was re-elected to the International Court of Justice, after Britain withdrew its candidate from the election. Bhandari had recieved 183-193 votes in the General Assembly and was able to get all the 15 votes in the Security Council after the elections were held separately and simultaneously at the UN headquarters, situated in New York city. Matthew Rycroft, the Britain’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, commented about the withdrawal of the candidate from the election because they want him to contend as the Judge of the International Court of Justice. “The UK has concluded that it is wrong to continue to take up the valuable time of the Security Council and the UN General Assembly with further rounds of elections,” he stated.
Dalveer Bhandari’s re-election has been considered a big diplomatic victory for India, and the British also congratulated Bhandari for his accomplishment.
Dalveer has now become a permanent member of the court, and this is a huge matter for India, which is still not a member of the UN. His re-election has been praised by many people, including politicians, who’re celebrating by congratulating him, and telling the world that this will help India have more control, influence and recognition in the assembly.
