CBI raids Chidambaram and his son over INX deal

Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted raids on Tuesday at the home of senior Congress leader P Chidambaram and his son Karti. FIR registered against the son of Karti P. Chidambaram in connection with a case against the latter for allegedly influencing officials in the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) to regularise “unapproved” investments by INX Media when his father was finance minister.

The CBI alleged in its FIR against Karti and others, that at least Rs 3.5 crore was paid by INX Media which is promoted by Indrani and Peter Mukerjea to companies directly or indirectly under the control of Karti to influence the (FIPB) Foreign Investment Promotion Board decision. INX TV owners Peter and Indrani are charged with the murder of the latter’s daughter Sheena Bora who bribes to Chidambaram’s son Karti in 2007 for violating FIPB approvals. FIR also named the TV channel, Karti linked firms Advantage Strategic Consulting, Chess Management and unknown officials of Finance Ministry.

In fact, the CBI said that it had vouchers showing a payment of Rs 10 lakh to Advantage Strategic Consulting (P) Ltd, which was controlled by Karti indirectly. The agency said it also had three or four other vouchers related to payments to Karti’s firms. CBI teams conducted raids at 14 places including Chennai residence of P.Chidambaram after registering the FIR.

Apart from Prevention of Corruption Act, charges for criminal conspiracy and cheating are charged on the accused. Chidambaram and his trusted aides in Finance Ministry will be questioned by the CBI in the coming days.
