Cauvery Water Dispute verdict: Karnataka will get 14.75 TMC additional water, and Tamil Nadu, 177 TMC

Cauvery Water Dispute verdict has been declared, and it is in favor of Karnataka, as it is going to get 14.74 TMC additional water, while Tamil Nadu’s water supply has been reduced to 177 TMC. Dipak Sharma, who chaired the jury along with three other judges states that the river doesn’t belong to any one region, and state and must be shared by everyone. Last year, Tamil Nadu has urged the court to make changes on how the water is going to be shared and to set up a  Cauvery Management Board. “The river is perennial, but the litigation should not be,” Tamil Nadu’s lawyer Shekhar Naphade had said to the court.

The Cauvery river is 765-km long, and is referred to as Ganga of the South India. It has also been a source for many people in Karnataka and Tamil. The dispute between the two states began when the water rewarded to Tamil Nadu, from the  270 TMC, was 192 TMC, and Kerala got 30 TMC, while Ponducherry was given 9 TMC. Karnataka’s request was to slash the amount of water given to Tamil Nadu by 132 TMC, while the latter demaded 352 TMC.

There had been attempts to resolve the conflict in 2016, by the way of arbitration, failed, as the Supreme court had asked the government for the formation of a Cauvery Management board, but, the centre had decline the request, stating that only the Parliament had the power to create something like this.
