Cabinet apprised of India-Japan MoU for silk research

The Union Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on Tuesday apprised of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Central Silk Board (CSB) of India and the National Institute of Agrobiological Sciences (NIAS) of Japan for collaborative research in the field of silkworm rearing and silk industries.

The MoU was signed on November 11 last year for developing prolific bivoltine hybrids of silkworm suitable for India’s tropical weather conditions.

“The MoU of scientific and technological nature will help develop prolific hybrid silkworms, which will improve manufacturing capacity and quality of Indian sericulture industry and thereby enhance exports of silk and silk products,” an official release said.

The government said the Indian textiles and apparel industry would be able to produce world-class silk and silk products as a result of the the MoU.
