Begum Akhtar 103rd birth anniversary marks by Google Doodle

Google Doodle marked the 103rd birth anniversary of legendary saint Begum Akhtar who was popularly known as the classical singer. Begum Akhtar was also known as Mallika-e-Ghazal across India. She started singing at the age of fifteen. And was honoured with several awards including Sangeet Natak Akademi award for vocal music, Padma Shri award and Padmbhushan award for her epic performances.

Begum Akhtar (Akhtari Bai Faizabadi) was born in Faizabad on 7th October 1914. She was the well-known Indian singer of Ghazal, Thumris and Dadra genres of the Indian classical music. Gazal’s Mallika Begum Akhtar pronounced Urdu very well. She has written several songs and ghazals that depicts the struggle and interesting aspects of her life. Begum Akhtar faced many challenges to become the classical singer as her family doesn’t support her.

The singing legendary saint Begum Akhtar was not only known as the singer but also as the actor. She did acting in several films movies of her era. She was passed on 30th October in 1974 after the brief illness. At that time she was performing in Ahmedabad, she was not able to sing well because of her bad condition. Then she was taken to the hospital where she declared as dead.
