Basant Panchami celebrated across India with worship of Goddess Saraswati, Marks start of Holika bonfire preparation for 2018

Basant Panchami is being celebrated today as people pray to Godess Sarawati (Maa Saraswati) for wisdom and the flourishing of knowledge in one’s life. Yellow is the color that is the most associated and prominent with the occasion. Many women wear yellow or have celebratory decorations in their homes. Basant Panchami also marks a start of Holi preparation for the current year, 2018. All across the Indian religions, the festival is celebrated in very different ways, and on the social media, it has found its own significance, as people wish each other well, and usher in a year and season that is more kind and prosperous for them.

Spring is intrinsically tied to the occasion of Basant Panchami, as the name “Basant” or “Vasant” means Spring, and it is celebrated on the fifth day of spring, hence, Panchami. People have begun to celebrate, starting with prayers and poojas in their homes. Many also shared their wishes and greetings on the social media, asking Maa Saraswati to provide them with blessings and a good year that gives them strength to fight every obstacle. Because Saraswati is a symbol of arts and knowledge, she is also revered by all the artists and people who have a career in artistic vocations.

With vibrant colors and yellow tinged sweets like khichdi and other dishes, the day is about the happiness and the burst of sunshine that fills everyone’s life after days of cold and long nights. It also gives people the confidence and enthusiasm to do their work, and to keep creating things that mean most for them, which is the highest honor that can be given the the goddess.
