Increasing competition in the Telecom Industry pushes Aircel to surrender its license in 6 circles – Gujarat, Maharashtra, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh (West). Keeping an eye on this Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has directed subscribers to port out to other networks has asked the Aircel, which is shutting operations in six circles by January 30, and other carriers to allow subscribers to port in other companies. TRAI said, “Aircel Limited and Dishnet Wireless Limited (both jointly Aircel Group) have informed to return their license of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh (West). The date of return of its service license, i.e. 1 December 2017, will be closed in 60 days. ‘ Aircel has fixed the deadline for shutting down operations on January 30, 2018.
On December 11, Aircel requested TRAI for an exemption from the current rules which prohibits users from porting out within 90 days of joining a telco. Airce said to TRAI “a large number of both prepaid and post-paid subscribers, will be inconvenienced and may even not be able to exhaust their pre-paid balances in the six circles.” TRAI accepted Aircel’s request and directed Aircel to notify users by issuing advertisements in newspapers and on its website that subscribers will be allowed to port out by March 10.
TRAI has also asked the telco to provide the details about the number of users who could not port out by March 10 and unspent balances of those subscribers, besides other subscriber details.
