‪Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research has become one of the few centres that have the facility for the multi-organ transplantation across India. After the Jimper had performed a liver transplant recently for a 38-year-old man of Puducherry, who was suffering from liver cirrhosis. The operation has extended for 12 hours that involved a team for eight surgeons, nursing, technical staff and four anesthesiologists. And four operation theatres were utilised for the liver transplant operation. The patient was managed intensive care unit from last one week for the dedicated liver transplant.

As per the reports the Head of the liver transplant unit at Jipmer and the additional professor of the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology Dr Biju Pottakkatsaid that the liver was retrieved from a victim of a road accident. And the family of the victim expressed their willingness to donate the organs for transplant. he further added that his kidneys and corneas were also transplanted to benefit another three patients.

While the additional professor and head of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care Dr Sandeep Mishra said that Anaesthesia management of patients undergoing liver transplantation involves the understanding of the various physiological problems to long-term liver failure. So, it requires real-time monitoring of pulse rate, heart function, maintaining adequate oxygen supply to vital organs and blood pressure. The vital parameters are subject to significant during the time of surgery that results in an adverse impact on the recipient as well as on the newly transplanted organ.

As per the reports, the liver transplant clinic will be started from this month on every Tuesday for the poor patients who require liver transplantation. The first liver transplantation surgery was done in less than ₹1 lakh hospital expenditure. And the operation was done free of cost for the poor patients. This is one of the cheapest transplantation across India. Whereas in the private hospital’s patients have to spend around ₹25-30 lakhs.
