Vasundhara Raje on Padmavat ban: Rani Padmini is our diginity

Padmavat, previously titled Padmavati, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, and starring Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh has been banned in Rajasthan, and now Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje has spoken about the decision to restrict the movie, which is the story of Rani Padmini and her defiance to the Muslim ruler Allauddin Khilji. She has said, “Rani Padmini’s sacrifice is a matter of honour and pride for the state and hence Rani Padmini is not just a chapter in history but our dignity. We will not allow defamation of her honour”. The Rajput Karni Sena,  fringe group that has been protesting against the movie also hails from Rajasthan, and had been pressuring the government to ban the movie, even after it has received clearance certificate from the CBFC board.

Padmavat is scheduled to be released on 25 January, and it will be clashing with Padman, which stars Akshay Kumar, Sonam Kapoor and Radhika Apte.

The difficulties for the movie might not be over yet, because even though it was given the clearance certificate by the censor board, the director was told to make five major modifications in the film, to ensure that no on takes it as a historically accurate depiction of the tale, and to also put a disclaimer that the movie does no endorse the practice of Sati or Jauhar. Another demand was that the filmmakers to correct or modify the names of places and peoples’ that are featured in the movie, which has resulted in a shocking 300 cuts!

As the sources suggest, such cuts are in relation to the name of places like Mewar, Delhi and Chittor, which all will either be muted or replaced cut from the final product. Such an editing process has not been advised since the ex Chief of CBFC, Pahlaj Nihalani asked the makers of Udta Punjab to make 89 cuts in the movie, but the filmmakers refused and moved the Bombay High Court, resulting in their victory.

But it has been rumored that Sanjay Leela Bhansali has agreed to all the requests and is quickly making amends in the movie. The social media, however, has been shocked, and questioned if the final product has at least 300 cuts, what actually are they going to watch, a trailer length feature film?
