Punyalan Private Limited movie review: A light comedy that’s worth watching

Punyalan Private Limited is directed by Ranjith Sankar, and stars Jayasurya, Aju Varghese and Dharmajan. It is the sequel to 2013 hit film, Punyalan Agarbattis. The movie is about Joy Thakkolkaran, who, along with his friends, Greenu Sharma, Dharmajan Bolgatty, cooks up another new scheme to start his business. It is about their struggles with the system and how they navigate its hierarchies to get approval for their business. The movie illuminates the corruption of the government, but also celebrates the bonds between the friends and their different experiences. Joy’s scheme, about packaged, clean drinking water “Punyalan Vellam” is met with appreciation, but he has to cross some obstacles before even accomplishing it.

All this might seem very self serious and tedious, but Sarkar balances all the social commentary with a heavy dose of laughter and wit, so the movie is never overburdened with people screaming for justice or crying foul at the corruption of the system.

The movie is supported with great work from all the actors, especially Jayasurya, who gives the character a special dignity that saves him from coming off as too heroic or naive, and the supporting characters are realized by actors so well that you feel that their friendship is indeed very real.

All in all, the movie is highly recommended for anyone who like the first film, but also for people who are seeing it for the first time.
